Crystal Antlers – mindless racket or divine noise?
Some things in life are set to permanently puzzle me. These include the questions of why things never worked out with Vikki Bassett when I was 16, who killed Roger Rabbit and what anyone ever sees in gherkins. A new addition on this list of mysteries is the riddle of Crystal Antlers’ popularity in the blogosphere. I was convinced this would end at some point, but the adulation and fanfare seems unabating.
Perplexed, I download their most recent number, Tentacles, to see if my previous suspicions – that this was a screaming nosebleed of a band making a ghastly, melody-free racket with about as much punk-rock sensibility as Robbie Williams – were correct. And, sadly, they were. It’s just mindless, funless, feckless noise; from the scream-as-loud-as-you-can thrash mentality usually well represented at Reading and Leeds festivals each year. Lord knows if the lyrics are up to much - trying to make them out ranks as one of life’s more fruitless enterprises.
Sorry fellow bloggers, but I’m just not with you on this one. File under Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong, or The Horrors.
